    One thought on “Lincoln's Billy”

    1. The historical William Herndon worked with Lincoln, knew Lincoln as a friend, and even co-wrote a biography of the famous president. But the protagonist of Tom LeClair’s Lincoln’s Billy is a much more interesting character than these surface facts might show. Written in the voice of Billy Herndon and spiced with recollections of his famous friend's well-told stories, the novel reveals a man deeply devoted to truth, with nicely nuanced views on the emancipation of both women and of slaves, an [...]

    2. I grew up in Illinois and was taught the Lincoln myth in school. As a history teacher I appreciate a book that shows Lincoln as a man not an idol, warts and all, even in a fictionalized book. This book makes Lincoln look more human and not less a great man. It also was an easy read. I almost finished it in one sitting. P.S. I did not get the book on the 18th, I got it on the 17th and finished it on the 18th.

    3. I received this book thru .I thought the book was enjoyable. Apparently the author, Tom LeClair, is prolific and has written hundreds of reviews for numerous magazines. My lingering question is how accurate is the depiction of Lincoln and his former law partner, Billy Herndon? A reader hopes that, although the book is fiction (a novel), the personalities of the main characters is fairly accurate. If they are, then I would give this book five stars.

    4. I received this book through the First Reads program interesting book filled with many anecdotes of life between these two historical figures. a fictional account that one would assume is somewhat based on actual occurrences. entertaining nonetheless.

    5. “Lincoln’s Billy” imagines what the president’s Illinois law partner, William Herndon — whose biography of Lincoln was published in 1889 — might have written in his autobiography.

    6. totally loved this book well written easy to read it was nice to read about lincoln who happens to be one of my favorite presidents that he was human also loved that he had a humor to him
