    1. One Murder More I love a good murder mystery and have not heard of this author, I am the type of reader that loves to read something new and refreshing from either a new author or one that I have never heard of. The story starts out with "Maren Kane could barely make out the yellow dividing line a few feet in front of her through the thick, grey valley fog." Ok so that sentence had me thinking that something bad was going to happen. Sure enough Maren witnesses an accident on the dark road. She g [...]

    2. I am always attracted to a new author. I like to explore their first offering. Usually they put it all out there. They want to make a big splash, so they throw anything that they can think of into their first book. Sometimes that works, and sometimes you wonder if they even had an editor. If the author can write, and they have someone to help them reign in their imagination, then it can be a wonderful experience. One Murder More is one of those debut novels that are a pleasure to read; for the mo [...]

    3. In this intriguing political mystery, a legislative aide is murdered at the California state Capitol.Maren Kane, a lobbyist for a toy company, is trying to get a bill passed with much resistance from many politicians. She becomes involved in trying to solve the murder when a close colleague is arrested for the crime. Her life is threatened and her brother is almost killed trying to save her. Maren continues to look for the killer and almost loses her life, putting those close to her in jeopardy. [...]

    4. I enjoyed this book from GoodReads. Maren Kane is a lobbyist for a manufacturerer of children's ecofriendly, safe toys. The author Kris Calvin integrates political intrigue, being vegan, ecology, and (best of all in my estimation) dog care, rescue, and rehabilitation without ever getting "heavy" or "preachy". These issues are merely threads lightly woven into the mystery of killings that Maren comes upon and solves. I liked the hint of humour, the fast pace that held my interest. My sole problem [...]

    5. I found this to be a great debut. It held my interest from the start to finish. I look forward to reading the next Maren Kane Mystery. I'm not normally into political thrillers, but this wasn't bogged down in a lot of the politics. It did refresh my memory on some things that I've forgotten about how bills get passed and the hobnobbing that goes with some of them.Ms. Calvin did a great job starting this new series.I'm giving my honest opinion in exchange for this book that I won on First-Reads.

    6. One Murder More is a smart, riveting, and on point political mystery that takes twists and turns you will not see coming. There is something about a well crafted mystery that sends chills down my spine and puts a smile on my face. The elements all have to be there and if you are mystery lover, you will know what I mean. True mystery and suspense readers sit sit down with a book and have mental check lists of what they want. Even if you don’t think you do this…you do. We all want intrigue, the [...]

    7. Set in Sacramento, California 'One Murder More' introduces us to Maren Kane, a lobbyist for an environmental toy manufacturer. The book throws us quite literally into a drainage ditch within a few paragraphs and starts with a good jolt you want from a thriller - political or otherwise! But whilst this accident appears to have no bearing on the story it turns out that Maren just happened to be in the wrong place at the right time, as the incident enables her to start to piece together the motive be [...]

    8. Full review on my blog: eviloverlordthoughts/revieOne Murder More opens with lobbyist Maren Kane witnessing a car going over the embankment and into a lake. With another passing driver, she frees the two small children from the backseat. Checking for a pulse, it is obvious their grandmother is dead. Little does she know that it is only the first death of her day. And of her month! It is obvious that Kris Calvin has lived in the Sacramento area for many years during her career as a political advoc [...]

    9. This book offers fascinating insight into the machine that is our Washington policymakers. We see the heavy influence of lobbyists and the behind-the-scenes deals necessary in order to pass a bill. The realism here puts us behind those closed doors with the politicians. This, in my opinion, is the book's strength. The plot unravels at a good pace, speeding up and carrying us along as we move closer to the truth. We're right there with Maren, as she persistently digs up secrets in order to find a [...]

    10. Interesting premise, great thriller motive as it turns out. Would have given it more stars but I was unimpressed with the writing, and peeved that it was so poorly edited. When I took it out of the wrapper, I instantly loved the cover, and the jacket has a superb feel. It looks so professional, but that's where the professional part seemed to end. Misspellings (Character name), quote left off, period left off, wrong word tensen't remember it all. Those types of errors distract me and tend to cau [...]

    11. “A beautiful legislative aide is found stabbed to death in California's Capitol building. Maren Kane, a lobbyist for a fledgling Sacramento-based toy company, is in the midst of a legislative fight that could make or break her career. She doesn’t have time for a coffee break let alone involvement in a murder investigation. But when police arrest Maren's colleague for the crime, she's certain they have the wrong man. The cops suspect a crime of passion―love gone wrong. Maren knows that in th [...]

    12. Especially for a debut novel, One Murder More was an excellent read. I generally have trouble reading fiction, preferring the intrigue of history over most stories, but the excitement of discovering the true plot behind the murders made this book a wonderful read. There are a few flaws (a few editing mistakes and a confusing beginning) but once the plot really started to twist I couldn't set the book down. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a fun summer read--especially those who [...]

    13. Yeah, I started reading this and I couldn't do it. I didn't even make it past 1%. Right away I could tell that the writing would make me upset just because it seemed, well, something I could find in a high school creative writing class. Tons of information up front to impress the reader with random moments of purple prose.

    14. I like mysteries and I like politics, so this book was great fun to read! Maren Kane is an intriguing character; I look forward to more stories about her.

    15. I'm sad to say I did not enjoy this book. Basically it's super boring, there's really no action, no suspense, nothing to really keep your attention.

    16. A murder is discovered in the halls of the California Capitol (actually, a lady's restroom), and the lobbyist who made the discovery is drawn into an investigation of the case because of her connection with the victim and suspect. Because the heroine isn't directly involved in the murder investigation and is only an acquaintance of the principals instead of a close friend, the tension was somewhat diluted for me. There were also a few coincidences that stretched my credulity. Nevertheless it was [...]

    17. Maren Kane is a lobbyist who tries to push legislation through the California legislature. A senate aide is murdered and Maren's close associate and friend Sean, is the prime suspect. Maren works hard to find out what really happened, and she uncovers a plot involving the governor, competing forces opposed to the proposed legislation, corruption and bribery. The ending was a surprise. I liked the book and highly recommend it.

    18. I really enjoyed this book ! I was a history major in University, but my minor was political scienceIt was nice to read a book that was a murder mystery with such political influence and intrigue. Maren was a well written character that you were rooting for from page one. I am very interested to see the next adventure Maren gets into. I'm also excited to see what happens with her jealous ex, and Alec.oh the drama !!!

    19. I enjoyed reading this book interesting story, and good character development. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone looking to read a good murder mystery story.Thank you to and the author/sponsor for providing this book in a giveaway.

    20. This political thriller is beautifully written; it's a compelling story that kept me guess almost to the end. The characters are fully developed, likable, and real, and they are the ones who drive the story. The author clearly draws the atmosphere of the political intrigue that happens in state politics, as well as the heart-thumping panic that come with death and near-death situations. I did note a few small continuity errors, but they were easily brushed aside to follow the fast pace of the bo [...]

    21. It was interesting in that I was going to a political convention in Sacramento. I looked for that killer everywhere.

    22. A real page-turner. Good themes, nice style, good flow, but not quite polished. Really promising for a first-timer!Last third of book not totally satisfying: too many plot threads made for a wrap-up that seemed forced at times.

    23. Kris Calvin's, One Murder More, was a simple and efficient whodunit. There were many things I liked about this new authors style choices and the story line itself. The story begins with lobbyist, Maren Kane saving children from a drowned, wrecked vehicle along with Senator Alec Joben. Shortly after, she finds a good friend dead. Unfortunately, her old friend and mentee, Sean, is immediately nabbed for the unthinkable crime. Maren doesn't believe the cops have the right guy and thus, works hard t [...]

    24. I won this book from in exchange for an honest review.I enjoyed this book for the most part. It was fast-paced enough to keep the reader from getting bored, yet not so fast that you got lost or confused. My main problem was that many of the characters were completely one-dimensional and the heroine's "love interest" in the form of the handsome senator kind of seemed like a jerk. His treatment of his ex-wife and Maren's support of him doing it really upset me and made me wonder if the author has [...]

    25. "One Murder More" is the first novel by Kris Calvin. This is a murder mystery where Calvin draws upon her experience in the California political system to provide some insight into some of the dealings that go on behind the scenes.I thought the novel started out really well, but fizzled out in the second half. I think part of this has to do with Calvin's plan to have a series of books focused around Maren Kane, the lobbyist protagonist of the novel. She is a go-getter, and we get a good look at [...]

    26. From the Cover: In One Murder More a beautiful legislative aide is found stabbed to death in California's Capitol building. She hasn't time for a coffee break, let alone involvement in a murder investigation. But when police arrest Maren's colleague for the crime, she's certain they have the wrong man. 27. I got this as part of a free giveaway -- the author is the sister of kindle blogger Bufo Calvin. This is her first book.On the whole it was fine. The mystery was reasonably complex -- she certainly knows the ins and outs of politics in the California statehouse. There were, however, several scenes that seemed to come out of the blue -- necessary to the plot but didn't follow naturally. As well as a subplot that wasn't needed at all. Still, I think she intends to make this a series, so it's possi [...]

    28. Exciting read and an intriguing female lead character!I bought this book on the advice of a friend, and I'm so glad that I did. Maren Kane is a smart, funny, and compassionate character, the plot is unusual but relevant to current events, and I really look forward to reading more of her adventures in the future. The glimpses into the California legislature and lobbying scene was fascinating, and as someone relatively unfamiliar with the lobbying process, I appreciated that the intricacies of the s [...]

    29. I was definitely ready for a murder mystery after having read several classics, memoirs, and historical fiction reads. Excited for a fun reading journey, I snuggled up to One Murder More by Kris Calvin.A great hardcover copy in bold read(HA, books on the brain) I mean RED!! Excellent. 368 pages of mystery madness. It has tons of political lingo and referencesat was a bit of a turnoff for mebut not by much. I was able to breeze right through it and find myself riveted to much of the story-line an [...]
