    1. Find all my book reviews, plus author interviews, guest posts and book extracts, on my blog: whatcathyreadnext.wordpress/The focus of the book is the battlefields of Gaul as the very existence of the Roman Empire is threatened by the marauding hordes of Attila the Hun. To oppose them, a fragile alliance of Romans and Franks exists, largely on the principle of ‘my enemy’s enemy is my friend.’ Against this backdrop, individual struggles for power are played out, plots are made, alliances for [...]

    2. What can you say about Atilla the Hun? Well, he was one nasty dude, but not any more so than the Roman Empire. Both were hungry for control. In On the Edge of Sunrise, we read about two people caught in the crossfire of this power struggle. Arria is a young widow, who is forced into a marriage to Tribune Drusus, who she despises. She loves another, a forbidden love. Garic is a Frank Warrior, a Long Hair, who Arria falls in love with. She is requested by a Roman commander Aetius to deliver a mess [...]

    3. Atilla the Hun What can you say about Atilla the Hun? Well, he was one nasty dude, but not any more so than the Roman Empire. Both were hungry for control. In On the Edge of Sunrise, we read about two people caught in the crossfire of this power struggle.  Arria is a young widow, who is forced into a marriage to Tribune Drusus, who she despises. 4. A rich and lush story that grabs the reader from the first and plunges them headlong into action. Simply put, I loved this story. I love a heroine with some steel in her spine and Arria has it in spades. The attraction between her and Garic was instant, with a wonderfully tense buildup as they navigate Roman and Barbarian politics, with the further complication that Garic is not the only one quite taken with Arria. Then there is the slimy Roman commander Drusus and the slave Marcella, whose mach [...]

    5. A completely out of the blue request from an author I've not read before to read and review their work is not a common occurrence, but one that proved to be a definite pleasure. Not only is the book full of great characters, superb action and wonderfully descriptive narrative, it is also fairly new historical territory for me. Attila is on the rampage and has Rome in his sight. Arria, a Roman Senator's daughter, is a recently widowed diplomatic envoy. On a mission to The Franks her life is chang [...]

    6. I know I am a bit biased as I love history based books but I loved this book. It mixes perfectly history and romance, which I want to say romance is not normally my first choice. A woman's choice her duty or love? Oh chose the love girl it is much better. The scenes are perfectly orchestrated and draws you into each and every page. I loved it and finished it in record time. A must read for the history lovers who love a little romance to spice it up.

    7. On the Edge of Sunrise is a gripping story with extraordinary characters, adventure, action, intrigue and love. The author's scrupulous scholarship makes the fifth-century time period more than stage setting: Our senses experience the world around us. Readers get an accurate picture of Europe as the Roman Empire fades and the Christian Church rises.

    8. First book in a new historical trilogy. Edge of Sunrise is a beautifully done historical read with just the right touch of Romance. The characters will pull you in an leave you wanting to read more. A must for any historical romance fan!

    9. There was a lot of potential, but sadly I was quickly disappointed. There are some good points, though. The stars are for choosing the time of the Fall of Rome which one of my favorite historical periods, unfortunately very little explored by contemporary literature, in spite of its excellent dramatic potential and fascinating cultural context. The author does a good job in capturing some main features of this declining civilization, and its confrontation to other cultures -the refinement of Rome [...]

    10. I enjoyed reading Cynthia's books. This book can satisfy your thirst for both romance and history all at once. It takes place in a time period that I have not read much about so I liked that I learned a little while being entertained. There is romance, adventure, battle scenes a little of everything. The author did a good job of making you feel like you were a part of the story through her detailed descriptions. She did her research and it shows. I also thought the story flowed nicely and was ea [...]

    11. A Roman romance with intrigue and Attilla the Hun--what's not to love? Ms Miller did an excellent job bringing to life 450 AD and the conflicts of the Romans, Huns, and Franks. She capably wove historical details into an addicting story of love and intrigue featuring realistically drawn characters whose desires are easy to get caught up in. I particularly liked the Latin chapter headings. This is a unique historical romance set in a unique time. Even if you are not inclined to read stories set i [...]

    12. 2.5 stars. I wanted to love this book, but it was just okay. It has so much potential, but fell flat for me. The formatting has errors throughout the text: randomly-bolded punctuation marks and letters, places where a new paragraph should start and didn't, etc. The book needed more careful editing. The book uses the plot-twist-at-the-end model, which makes the reader need to reevaluate the characters we've been reading about for the last 300+ pages. Arria's role as a courier is mentioned in two [...]

    13. For always saying I don’t read romance, I certainly am reading a lot of historical romance lately. However, when I am asked to review these historical fiction books I pick them because of all the great history and plot involved. I think the romance is something swirled into it, but not at all like a harlequin-type read. On the Edge of Sunrise, Book One of the Long-Hair Saga, by Cynthia Ripley Miller, is one of those types of books that is filled full of historical detail and story based on a g [...]

    14. Military spouses deserve our respect. They keep the home fires burning while their 'other half' is off serving his (or these days, her as well) country. Arria went to the battlefield and held her dying husband in her hands. Next thing you know, her father, a Roman Senator, has shipped her off to Gaul as an emissary, and betrothed her to a up and coming military man (Drusus).Trouble is, on her way there, their camp was attacked by a tribe of barbarians. Arria is about to be assaulted and possibly [...]

    15. The Author has included a detailed list of characters plus various notes that the reader can check for clarification. I found this helpful and I enjoyed the Latin quotes and translations at the beginning of each chapter. This is a fast moving story that keeps the reader on the edge of his or her seat. In addition, the descriptions are excellent varying in tone from the gentle to the harsh. Lavender and Hyslop and the loving nickname “Mellitula” are charming compared to the strong language of [...]

    16. Set in a time of turmoil and war, Edge of Sunrise is a wonderful story about two people who come from very different backgrounds, but who find love in spite of the obstacles that surround them. Arria, the daughter of a Roman Senator and envoy, is saved from being abducted by men almost as fierce looking as the barbarian that had taken her from her camp. She finds herself strangely attracted to the "long hair" that introduces himself as Garic and struggles to maintain her composure as he delivers [...]

    17. Copy Received from Historical Fiction Virtual Book Tours for an honest reviewWhen I started "On the Edge of Sunrise" by Cynthia Ripley Miller I was instantly engrossed in the story and captivated by the characters. Arria was a worthy heroine and one that I liked instantly and was interested to see how her story would progress. First, Arria was a great heroine. I loved her courage and strength when she had to come face to face with the difficult choices ahead of her. Garic was her equal as a hero [...]

    18. The Historical Novel Society Review: "AD 450. The Roman Empire is breaking apart, and Attila the Hun has his sights set on conquering Gaul. An Assembly of Warriors is held in Gaul to try and unite Rome and the various erstwhile tribal factions into an army capable of defeating Attila. Arria, daughter of a Roman Senator and well-versed in the politics and diplomacy of the day, is sent to this assembly. Arria is abducted from the Assembly by a Chamavi warrior, a barbarian from another tribe, but t [...]

    19. On The Edge of Sunrise is the first historical romance novel I was able to finish. In fact, I couldn't put this book down! I've found that most novels in this genre are heavy on the romance, and I was happy to see that the author took the time to place an equal emphasis on ensuring historical accuracy (to the extent possible) throughout the book.In addition, in a world where many new authors have adapted to a quick-and-easy style of writing, it was refreshing to read a book that is extremely wel [...]

    20. I truly enjoyed this book. The author weaves a plot full of intrigue, romance and history. Arria, the daughter of a Roman Senator, is sent on a diplomatic mission that goes awry. Her rescuer is a "long-hair" Frank named Garic. The two are destined to be together, yet war and two deliciously devilish characters continue to stand in their way. The plot will keep you turning pages from their first meeting until the final scenes on the battlefield of Catalaunum. Well researched and well written. Anx [...]

    21. This one is just not for me. As much as I was looking forward to a romance set during this time period and featuring the Merovingians to boot, it's too melodramatic and flowery for my tastes. And I'm not a fan of explicit sex scenes featuring characters other than the hero and heroine. Others are loving it, so don't let me stop you if you want to give it a go, but I'm putting it down.
