    1. Wives of the East Wind begins with Wenya's marriage to a young engineer at the East Wind car factory in China, in the 60's. She forms a close relationship with the director, who is a war hero in their town, and strikes up a friendship with his young wife Zhenzhen.Having lost her father through the war, Wenya and her mother lived in poverty, in a small workers hut for most of her young life. This is nothing compared to the hardships and traumas that await her as the political agenda of China chan [...]

    2. Insight into political realities for individuals during Chinese decades since 1960s. Very differrent.

    3. I found this book to be obstructively interesting, albeit somewhat disjointed. The historical era the writer covers is post the cultural revolution where so many Chinese really had mixed feelings and mixed emotions about the new era they were living in. Often fear and ignorance, a leftover from the tortuous period of the revolution, seemed to overtake reason and sanity in a lot of the lives of the people, yet there was a feeling from the reading perspective, of being as a bird sitting on a windo [...]

    4. A novel set in China spanning a period from approximately 1958 to the mid-nineties. We follow the lives of two couples from wide eyed nationalism, to their eventual disillusionment. It is an interesting and enlightening read, the author draws from her own experience of growing up in China, and her own family history.A passage in the author's note sums the book up beautifully, "It was a painful past, but it also defined the youth of my parents' generation. Their experience embraced real idealism [...]

    5. Clunky, clumsy writing. It doesn't feel like the author lived through any of the things she is describing, but it is difficult to tell if that is just down to the unskilled writing. It is the life of a woman across the latter part of the 20th century in China, from the Great Leap Forward to the opening up to capitalism in the 90s, intertwining her personal disappointments with the disillusionment of the generation who believed and fought for communism. Could have been interesting if it hadn't be [...]

    6. I love the ease of reading this book - the empathy shown amongst friends in times of real hardships, the way they express their feelings, not in on outward form of expression but in a way that others are expected to understand. Very clear accounts of life in Communist China, the expectations on sons and daughters in times of change and the realisation that change happens for good or for bad.
