    1. A superb fantasy from a very talented author.I was quite a way into this book before I realised that there was one that came before it, The Severaine is cleverly grounded so that it can be read as a standalone, and it is so much more than a fantasy, A dystopian thriller? Not quite. There is myth and magic too and, at its heart, the elemental battle between good and evil, Sunlit uplands versus the power of darkness, of Night,Grieving Daniel is written so well that I was never sure, at the time, i [...]

    2. From the first moment on, The Severaine takes us on a journey into a mythical world where time and even life is relative, where dream and reality mix and blend, where nothing is as it seems at first sight; a fantasy world made up of places and names taken from various languages and traditions, making it seem universal. The characters are complex, and yet we can identify with them and their quest for justice. The story is beautifully written and highly imaginative; at times, the descriptions tend [...]

    3. Wonderful fantasy with a rich tapestry of amazing charactersI read the first book (Darrienia) in the epic 'The Forgotten Legacies' series and it set a high standard. Happily, the standard is still high in the second book. I thoroughly enjoyed 'The Severaine', which can be read easily as a stand-alone without need to read the first book. In this one, we learn a lot more about the dystopian world and the vibrant characters introduced in 'Darrienia', and discover some new ones that add to the fine [...]

    4. As much as I enjoyed K.J, Simmill's "Darrienia", it was still the typical first book in a series, even though it was very atypical in content and scope. That being said, I don't think I've read a story so intricate and sweeping in scope as "The Severaine". I found it to be engaging, well thought out, well written, and highly researched. The characters are distinctive and unique. I gave it 5 stars, but it deserves a higher rating than that6 or 7 stars at least. It is a book that I'll be re-readin [...]

    5. Another long read, but well worth the time investment. I've become a fan of Simmill's writing style and have already finished the next book in the series! I look forward to what's coming next.

    6. After having read Darrienia, the first novel in this series, I was amazed at the author's incredible and talented writing style, as her use of creative language and flow is stellar, and The Severaine holds even more poetic beauty than the first! This epic tale expands the world of The Forgotten Legacies series and continues to follow the paths of the beloved characters of Darrienia, with new dynamic ones to complement. The heroes must once again embark on a quest of magnitude in order to stop the [...]

    7. This book follows on from Darrenia and is the second book in the forgotten legacies. It was a while since I’ve read Darrenia but she puts handy reminders in so I got up to speed quickly. I think for this reason this book could be read as a stand-alone. Like the first book it is an epic fantasy adventure set in complex alternate universe. We meet up again with Daniel, but he has much changed. Plagued by nightmares caused by the events in book 1 he is a determined but troubled young man. On a qu [...]

    9. I dove into this novel without reading the first one in the series but got the hang of the story pretty quickly. And it’s quite an epic tale – rather like reading a Greek myth. In fact, there’s a certain poetry to the author’s writing, which is also filled with description of all the characters’ internal dialog. It’s an intricate story of good versus evil where it’s sometimes hard to tell where the real world ends and the dream world or magical world begins. I sympathized with the [...]

    10. I have read my fair share of fantasy books, but The Severaine is in a class of its own. With elegant prose and descriptive texts, Simmill has brought this dystopian world alive for her readers. The attention to detail is exquisite. It was so easy to visualize this world and as for the storyline, the word "epic," does not do this book justice. I haven't read such a fantastic fantasy since J. R. R. Tolkien ~ The Lord Of The Rings. With a cast of believable and likeable characters ~ who struggle wit [...]

    11. The follow up to 'Darrienia' continues the struggle to bring the mighty Severaine to heel. Gripped by guilt and grief, Daniel takes on the fight for justice and revenge, fielding those who might befriend or betray him. But the prophesies tell of only one conclusion - and it isn't a good one.I hadn't read the first book in this series, but it seems to work well as a standalone. Fantasy novels of the epic variety (of which I assume this is one), tend to pass me by, and as my interest in mythology [...]

    12. After reading “Darrienia” I couldn’t wait to get my hands on the sequel, and it was even better than the first book. It is saying a lot since I really loved “Darrienia.” First of all, I really liked how the author masterfully wrote the character of Daniel, stricken with grief after losing his Zo and now struggling with vivid dreams that he quite often can’t tell from reality. The quests get even more dangerous in this sequel, and I couldn’t help but turn pages faster to follow our [...]

    13. Having not read “Darrienia” I was interested to see if this book could ‘stand alone’, capture my imagination and, yet, be a story I could easily follow. I was not disappointed. The creatures were surprising; the landscape marvelously convincing; and the masterfully fashioned and absorbing characters connected with me in unexpected ways, leading me into a mystically dystopian realm I would happily continue to lose myself within. The main character in particular, Daniel, is exceptionally a [...]

    14. Great writing, masterful storytelling and a cast of characters, so vividly portrayed they became living breathing entities, more like movie characters than literary.I adore this genre and read the author's last book. This was as good if not better. Her descriptions of the world she created were superb, the characters interesting, and the plot top drawer.I loved this book and hope that here is a third in this wonderful Forgotten Legacies Series.

    15. The author has a unique and original writing style. This epic novel is a great book with very well planned characters and full of adventures. The story could well be an ancient Greek myth.I really enjoyed it. Definitely a must read.

    16. Short and Sweet review:Pros: Good plot. Developed characters.Cons: Dry writing.Overall: Apologies. This was a DNF for me. I felt like it was on it's way to a great book. I feel it is a great book. But the writing was done in a very dry way, and I could not complete it. Regardless of that, I will say again that the characters were developed, the plot was complex and well-done.
