    1. A fascinating memoir about the ups and downs 0f a Chinese-Australian burlesque performer in modern day Shanghai. Well written and well-paced till the very end.

    2. Thanks to Dymocks Canberra for the ARC.4.5 starsI really enjoyed reading this book. I couldn't put it down.

    3. Fantastic book from a masterful story-teller. Totally absorbing from a unique perspective. Congratulations Jenevieve on this wonderful book!

    4. Fascinating page-turner following the misadventures of Jenevieve Chang, a burlesque performer finding her way in Shanghai.

    5. Not your usual sprawling family memoir. A very heady snapshot of East devouring the West and vice versa. The images of cultural clash and emotional collisions leaps across the page courtesy of Chang's choreographic and achingly raw voice. To be enjoyed over a minty cocktail with a dash of ginseng!

    6. I think I am in the minority here, as I did not like this book as much as other readers. I had trouble identifying with details, authenticy and the story. Her memoir relates mainly to herself, parents, grandparents, and other family members. Most of this information is quite interesting, but I found it frustrating the change of storylines throughout the memoir. Unhappy Chang runs away from Sydney to become a dancer in London; from there to Shanghai to become a Chinatown Doll in burlesque perform [...]

    7. Jenevieve Chang's autobiographical journey through the dizzying highs and crashing lows of Shanghai's Chinatown Dolls offers a view into her own personal triumphs and struggles finding a sense of home in the new China. Chang takes us behind the stage and facade of Shanghai's glitz and glam into a murky underworld of vice and virtue, treachery and loyalty, and the lives of those finding a place in the new China. This is a deeply personal and engaging story.

    8. What a life. This book is a great read. I sometimes got lost with the characters but I soon worked it out. Highly recommend this book.

    9. Great read - interesting story and quite well written. Engaging story about life in china pre boom and during its transformation into a mega city. Jenevieve has lived an interesting life! For any lovers of this book in Sydney - Jenevieve will be appearing at Waverley Library on June 20. Tix still availableeventbrite/e/meet-
